Understanding the History of Taekwondo
Modern Taekwondo developed in Korea following the end of Japanese occupation in 1945. During this period, several martial arts schools, known as kwans, were established by Korean martial artists with experience in different fighting systems.
Each kwan initially followed its own teaching methods, techniques and traditions. Over time, martial arts leaders worked to bring these styles together and create a unified Korean martial art.
This development eventually led to the martial art now known as Taekwondo, which combines powerful kicking techniques, controlled movements, discipline, respect and mental strength.
At Pinnacle Martial Arts, students learn that understanding martial arts history is an important part of appreciating its values and traditions.
Why Are Taekwondo Stances Important?
A strong stance creates the foundation for balance, movement, defence and effective technique.
Students at Pinnacle Martial Arts learn how to position their feet, legs, hands and body correctly so they can move with greater stability, speed and control.
Attention Stance – Charyot Sogi
The attention stance is commonly used during greetings, instructions and formal martial arts ceremonies.
Students stand upright with their feet together, arms positioned neatly beside the body and eyes facing forward. This stance teaches students to remain focused, disciplined and ready to listen.
Bowing from the attention stance demonstrates respect for instructors, senior students, training partners and the martial arts environment.
Open and Closed Fighting Stances
Open and closed stances describe the position of two competitors in relation to each other.
In a fighting stance, students keep their body balanced, hands raised and feet positioned so they can move quickly when attacking, defending or changing direction.
Students must also learn how to adjust their stance when facing opponents who lead with either their right or left leg. This develops adaptability, awareness and better decision-making during training.
Walking Stance – Gunnun Sogi
In a walking stance, one foot is positioned in front of the other while the body remains balanced and controlled.
The front knee is slightly bent, while the back leg provides stability and support. The stance allows students to move forward into an attacking technique or step backwards into a defensive position.
Correct walking stance practice can improve:
- Balance and posture
- Leg strength
- Coordination
- Movement control
- Attacking and defensive techniques
Different Taekwondo Training Systems
Taekwondo is practiced around the world through major organizations, including the International Taekwon-Do Federation and World Taekwondo.
Although their terminology, competition rules and technical methods may differ, both systems emphasize discipline, respect, physical development and consistent practice.
Stances and techniques may also vary slightly between martial arts organizations and individual schools. At Pinnacle Martial Arts, our instructors guide students through each movement carefully so they can understand the purpose behind every technique.
More Than Kicks and Punches
Martial arts training is not simply about learning how to fight. It helps students develop valuable qualities that can benefit them at school, at work and in everyday life.
Our Taekwondo and martial arts programs support the development of:
- Confidence and self-belief
- Discipline and self-control
- Focus and concentration
- Fitness, flexibility and coordination
- Respect and responsibility
